TWO denizens of 142 Barwick Road have had good eats today. One, a crow, bested a local wood pigeon in unarmed combat and has been chowing down on the remains all day. The other, PETER GALEY, at STICKY POMEGRANATE PERSIAN HALLOUMI.

This is a Gousto meal and my favourite of the five I have made so far. The earlier ones were a bit bland but this had a lot of sweetness in it which gave it a kick. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it for [personal profile] jekesta because it is so full of the glutens. Anyway what you do is sultanas, lemon zest, mint leaves and molasses to some BULGUR which is sort of like couscous probably, and fry some HALLOUMI with some lemon juice and something called RAS EL HANOUT, which is NOT a terrorist but IS a spicy thing. It may sound like these things do not go together but they SO DID. There were also caramelised onions in there. Do not be fooled, there is no way to make onions like caramel more's the pity, they just mean fry em a bit.

ANYWAY. I am sad at all the negative reviews of Yooka-Laylee because I had a lot of fun with it. I never got thoroughly stuck but some parts are very challenging. I could live without the minigames and the bosses are a bit long winded. But my only major complaint is with the camera control, especially during the flying manoeuvre. There's actually a much better flying mechanic when you briefly control a helicopter, so they should have just stuck with that. But overall it's fun and not just for nostalgic reasons but because there is much satisfaction to be had when a game doesn't hold your hand and tell you exactly where to go and what to do the whole time. Sadly the muted reaction means this is probably it for major 3D platformers now, apart from Ratchet and Clank which just seems to keep on going despite peaking around a decade ago.

I am looking forward to Final Fantasy XII THE ZODIAC AGE, though, which comes out in July. FFXII is my favourite FF even though I accept that it isn't the best in all areas. But the remastered music sounds wonderful and I can't wait to wander around Ivalice again. It is sad, though, that almost all my favourite games of the last ten years have been either remasters of older games or nostalgia fests. Only Lightning Returns really stands out as doing something fresh and interesting. I cannot express how it maddens me to see bland, boring, cookie cutter stuff like Uncharted 4 winning all the awards.

DOCTOR WHO ON SOON. Last week's had quite a nice if derivative idea and then did nothing with it for half an hour before wrapping everything up in a rushed and somewhat arbitrary manner, which at least was better than Frank Cottrell-Boyce's previous effort. HURRY UP NATALIE DORMER.
