I ate a box of Gousto things
Mar. 11th, 2020 09:10 pmI got a Gousto box for the first time this year! One of the things I had had before but forgotten about. Perhaps I made it badly because this time is was SO DELISH that I intend to make it again lots, if I can find where pomegranate molasses live in the shops.
Beetroot Hummus & Roast Veg Buddha Bowl
I am a big fan of Siddhārtha Gautama, and I do like how you can really impress Zen masters by tipping bowls over (possibly I have misunderstood those particular stories), but this was a bit everything and nothing. Butternut squash cubes and that thin, unappetising broccoli that exists are roasted and taste no less bland and chewy when they are, and there was a BIG PILE OF ROCKET to go on top. I do not mind rocket, but not enough to cover everything else. Thankfully, the dish also contains beetroot hummus, which is hummus with beetroot mashed in. It makes pink, sweet hummus, which wasn't quite pretty or yummy enough to save the whole meal but I may just make that one thing again on its own at some point. Imagine turning up to a pot luck with a tub of mauve mush! And making other people eat it!
Meat-Free Sticky Chilli Stir Fry
Big chunks of pepper are fried with some veggie mince. I forgot to read on the packet what the mince actually is, it tasted nicer than most veggie mince, possibly it was fungus-based. You put "chilli jam" in it, which is another thing I may struggle to locate in the Tesco's. Overall nice enough, but I question Gousto's commitment to Basmati rice, which is their go-to rice for most occasions, but for chilli is possibly a little too dry.
Sesame Seed Pesto Gnocchi & Tomato Medley
I have not leaned into gnocchi, traditionally, though I may start doing so since it was just about the only thing left in the pasta aisle last week. It does depend on what it is paired with. Here you make a delicious pesto with toasted sesame seeds in place of the pine nuts or whatever. You serve with three different sorts of roasted tomatoes, viz. wedges of a normal tomato, some cherry tomatoes and some baby plum tomatoes, all roasted with fresh rosemary. SO GOOD.
Sticky Pomegranate Persian Halloumi
You shallow-fry halloumi slices coated in lemon juice and ras al hanout along with caramelised slices of red onion. You boil some bulgar wheat and what the fuck is the weather doing? Sorry, you boil some bulgar wheat and stir in the aforementioned molasses, chopped fresh mint and some lightly-rehydrated sultanas. IT WAS SO AMAZING.
So, two that I will definitely make again and one that I will take one part of. That's not bad.
FOOOOOOD
